Château de Ferrand, Saint-Hippolyte, 33330 Saint-Émilion
Saint-Émilion is a delightful medieval village located in the heart of Bordeaux's famous vineyards. And it is precisely here that Château de Ferrand grows its vines from which it makes this fine red classified Grand Cru Classé. The blend, in keeping with tradition for the Saint-Émilion area is composed largely of Merlot grapes. In this case about 80 percent of the total, to which are added 15 percent Cabernet Franc and 5 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvested by hand, with grape selection in the vineyard, the grapes arrive at the winery in perfect condition. Here they are immediately subjected to a destemming phase with which vinification begins, taking place in thermoregulated stainless steel vats. To ensure maximum recognizability, each parcel is vinified separately. This is followed by 14-18 months of maturation in fine-grained French oak barrels. Impenetrable garnet red in the glass, this wine presents a fascinating bouquet of aromas. Notes of red and dark berry fruits, such as blueberries, raspberries, and cherries, complemented by floral, violet, and herbaceous hints. Balsamic and spicy flavors of coffee, hazelnut, licorice and tobacco close. The palate is elegant and structured, with hints of red and dark berry fruits, floral and balsamic. A wine of great minerality, it is fine and persistent. Excellent with red meat dishes, stews and roasts.
The history of the Château de Ferrand winery began in the 18th century. The owner and founder, Elie De Bétoulaud, a lawyer, poet and patron, was a great friend of King Louis XIV. And just to recreate the atmosphere of the palace of Versailles, he decided to have this wonderful Chateau built, divided among various rooms, tunnels and with acres of land. The wonderful property remained in the same family until 1978, when it was finally purchased by Baron Bich. After his death, today Ferrand is run by his daughter Pauline Bich Chandon-Moët and her husband Philippe Chandon-Moët. In 2010, the Château de Ferrand underwent major works. The vineyard was replanted, after a careful study of the soils to identify grape varieties best suited to the particular terroir. In all, the property covers 42 hectares, 32 of which are planted with vines classified as Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé. In the countryside, Merlot for 70 percent, Cabernet Franc for 29 percent and Cabernet Sauvignon for the remaining portion. Production is focused on respecting nature and developing sustainable production.
