    "Basadone" Verduno Pelaverga DOC 2024
    • Verduno, in the heart of the Langhe, is a wine-growing area - small but interesting - in the heart of Piedmont. It is here that this Basadone, Verduno DOC, proposed by Castello di Verduno was born. The grapes come from two vineyards, located in Massara and Olmo. Here the soils are typical, calcareous and clayey. The base is the indigenous Pelaverga piccolo, which has grown for centuries in this privileged corner of Piedmont. A true gem of Piedmontese oenology, it has been rediscovered and enhanced by the company, which planted the first pure vineyard of this variety in 1972. The harvest, carried out manually, begins with the careful processing of only the best bunches. It starts with maceration, carried out in steel, with periodic manual punching-down to extract the best aromas and the most balanced tannins. Subsequently, the wine matures for 8 months, again in steel tanks, preserving freshness and fragrance. Finally, after bottling, the wine rests for a further 3 months in the cellar before final release. Bright ruby red in colour, typical of young wines, the nose reveals an intense and fragrant bouquet, with spicy notes of black pepper and nutmeg intertwined with fruity hints of cherries in spirit and strawberries. In the mouth it is well balanced, dry and persistent, with a good structure and fine finesse.

Castello di Verduno is located in the heart of Piedmont's Langa region. A historic winery, its roots go back as far as the 16th century, when the Cerrato family began construction of the castle. Over the centuries, it became a symbol of the region's viticulture, passed under the control of the Savoys and then King Carlo Alberto who, in 1838, entrusted it to the management of Carlo Staglieno, a pioneer of oenology. Today, the winery is managed by the Bianco family, which, with its long winemaking tradition in Barbaresco, has contributed to enhancing the prized Nebbiolo and Pelaverga grape varieties. The latter, in particular, is a rare and indigenous vine that grows exclusively in Verduno. And it was precisely at Castello di Verduno that they were the first to dedicate themselves, with courage, to the cultivation of this vine back in 1972. Even today, the winery's philosophy is based on tradition, with vinification that respects historical methods, such as fermentation in open vats and ageing in large oak barrels.
