Cantina Sociale Sampietrana SCARL Via Mare 38 - San Pietro Vernotico (BR)
A grape variety that for centuries was called “loaded like a donkey” due to its incredible productivity in its youth. We are, of course, talking about Susumaniello, which owes its curious name precisely to this trait. When young, it produces so much that farmers had to carry the harvest on the backs of donkeys. But the real magic happens as the vine ages. Over time, yields decrease while quality rises, producing wines of concentration and elegance that few others can match. Sumaest by Cantina Sampietrana is born from this philosophy of rediscovery, among the red soils of San Pietro Vernotico in the province of Brindisi. Here, Susumaniello has found its ideal habitat, suspended between the warmth of the southern sun and the constant sea breeze from the two coasts. 100% Susumaniello, it stands out for its lively acidity and an aromatic profile leaning towards small black fruits and gentle spices. A grape bursting with energy, turning every sip into a discovery. The grapes are hand-harvested in the first half of September, aiming for the perfect ripeness to preserve its precious acidity. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to retain the purity of the fruit. The wine then matures for around six months in barriques. This brief oak ageing is essential: it softens the youthful tannins and gives a silky texture without masking the primary aromas of the grape. Deep ruby red with violet reflections that reveal its youth; on the nose, a burst of forest fruits with ripe blackberries and sour cherries, accompanied by a hint of black pepper and sweet spices. On the palate, the surprise is its freshness. The tannins are present but extremely soft, making the wine smooth and highly drinkable, with a notably persistent finish.
More than half a century of history! “We have always produced our wines directly in our winery, using only grapes from our own vineyards, largely Apulian bush vines over 50 years old, cared for with love and dedication.” Maximum authenticity, one might add, with a careful focus on what truly matters. Such as sustainable practices in the vineyard, including integrated or organic protection methods, and the use of alternative energy in the winery. All this within a strong social reality located in San Pietro Vernotico, in the province of Brindisi. The wines are the result of working with native grape varieties such as Negroamaro, Primitivo and Malvasia. Alongside them, the ancient Susumaniello, Aglianico, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Lambrusco, Fiano and Verdeca. As well as “international” varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet, Merlot and Chardonnay, which here in southern Italy produce wines of great pleasure and character.
