This is a wine that the Girlan winery offers as "typical" of its land of origin. So a fresh, light and fruity red, with a velvety and smooth texture. A wine capable of giving great satisfaction on the right table, one where the flavours are decisive but not excessive. A platter of speck or an alpine cheese are perfectly complemented by a glass of this "448 s.l.m.". For those who might be wondering, this unusual name refers to the height of the old farmhouse, home of the winery, located just under 500 metres above sea level. No wood is used in the winery. Only temperature-controlled stainless steel for vinification, and cement vats for ageing.
23 must be a lucky number. At least in South Tyrol. Yes, because in 1923 the Girlan Winery was founded and, as chance would have it, it was founded by 23 winegrowers. Cabal aside, the winery is housed in a historic 16th century farmhouse. Behind these walls of ancient tradition and in the intricate corridors of the Cellar, nowadays the secrets of cutting-edge wine-making technology and the ideal conditions for aging wines are hidden. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then. And wines in those cellars. Today, 200 winegrowers are involved in the Girlan project, spread over an area of approximately 220 hectares. Vineyards in the best production areas of Oltradige and Bassa Atesina, all worked with great dedication. The oenologist responsible for the creation of the wines is Gerhard Kofler, who personally takes care of the contacts with the vintners, giving his advice in the most delicate phases of the season.
