CHARACTERISTICS
  • TypeVino rosso fermo
  • Location Lombardy
  • Grapes 100% Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca)
  • Sensations The final blending of the different wines obtained is a balancing act between the biodiversity originating from the Mother Rock of the different vineyards, the altitude and the slope of the terraces: the small percentage of dried grapes makes it possible to obtain a Valtellina rich in enveloping tannins and a pure and fresh aromatic character typical of Nebbiolo from the Alps. Brilliant garnet colour with ruby highlights. Intense fruity bouquet of blackberry and blueberry, wood liquorice and spicy notes reminiscent of laurel and juniper. Dry, savoury flavour with elegant, velvety tannins.
  • Vinification Red wine vinification with temperature control. Depending on the quality and provenance of the grapes, long post-fermentation macerations are carried out, sometimes over a month, or shorter vinifications with low temperatures that allow fermentation to proceed very slowly. Maturation: Two years of which at least one in wood in medium to large French and Slavonian oak casks.

    "Mazèr" Valtellina Superiore DOCG 2020
  • Valtellina is a magical place. An Alpine valley from which come some of Italy's most appreciated red wines. Like this Valtellina Superiore Mazèr, produced by Nino Negri, a historic Valtellina company located in the province of Sondrio. The starting grapes are Nebbiolo, which here take the name Chiavennasca. The harvest is conducted strictly by hand, since the vineyards, small terraced plots, are too small to be worked by mechanical means. The result of a careful study of the territory and the 'savoirfaire' of the Nino Negri winery, the batches of grapes are selected from the different areas of the valley to obtain a wine of great balance. A small part of the Nebbiolo at harvest time is dried for a few days: the grapes are concentrated and the resulting wine is added later to the rest of the mass. A care that is amply repaid when the first glass is poured. Garnet red to the eye, this Valtellina Superiore has pleasantly spicy aromas with notes of cloves, liquorice and chocolate. In the mouth it is dry and austere, pleasantly tannic and above all very persistent. A wine to be paired with strong-flavoured dishes, perhaps game-based, or with well-aged cheeses. Also excellent with a flake of Bitto, to savour a typical product of the same territory.

In Valtellina, Nino Negri represents one of the most important, and beautiful, oenological realities. The winery was founded at the end of the 19th century but has been part of the prestigious Gruppo Italiano Vini since 1986. Like so many fine Italian companies, Nino Negri's commitment in recent years has been shifting towards environmental sustainability. A total of thirty hectares are under vine, mostly on steep terraces that rise from the valley floor to the steep walls of the Alps framing the Valtellina. Viticulture here is heroic and laborious. Every operation, every treatment must be done by hand, without the help of machinery. But the results often repay such hard work. The wines of Valtellina, of which Nino Negri is one of the most shining representatives, are among the best loved by experts all over the world. From the Sforzato to the Valtellina Superiore, they are all wines to be tried without neglecting any of them.
