With a label (and a name) like that, it is impossible not to notice. Fuck You Red, a DO wine from the Valencia area, is part of the range offered by the eclectic Neleman winery. And it is a 'Limited Edition'. But let us proceed with order. The base is a grape called Marselan, which is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha. The latter is an indigenous grape variety that goes well with the power of the more famous Bordeaux variety. At Neleman, it has been cultivated for some time, convinced of its great potential. In vinification, it combines the Mediterranean character of Garnacha and the elegance of Cabernet. Fuck you, in particular, is the result of a vinification of grapes from low-yielding vines, carefully harvested and processed in small fermentation tanks. After processing, the wine is aged in new French oak barrels for at least 14 months. Bottled without clarification or stabilisation, it reveals a strong, fruity red wine. Organic and vegan. A powerful, tasty and balanced wine, to be served with Mediterranean dishes or with good spicy vegetarian food.
'Good wine to save the world'. The statement that those at Neleman Organic Vineyard make on the home page of their website is a strong one. The kind that stands out. But let us proceed in order. Casas del Rey is a small village located in one of the highest areas of Valencia, in the heart of the Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park. During the last century, the main income of its (few) inhabitants came from the cooperative winery they created to pool the grapes from their vineyards and produce their own wines. This winery, called 'Cristo Rey', was founded in 1961, with a capacity of only 11,000 hectolitres. But, due to the declining population, it stopped operating a few years ago. Recently, Derrick Neleman acquired it and officially transformed it into Bodegas Neleman, bringing new energy to the small village. Mainly indigenous Spanish varieties are cultivated, such as Verdil, Tardana, Bobal, Monastrell, Marselan, Tempranillo or Garnacha. Although traditional methods are used, the resulting wines are modern, full of balance, richness and freshness. Neleman wines are strictly organic, produced without the use of pesticides or additives. Because... taking care of nature not only makes for good wines today, but also for eternity!
