Imbottigliato all'origine da Montalbera - Castagnole Monferrato (AT) - Cascina Montalbera, 1
We are in Castiglione Tinella, in the heart of the Langhe, a land where vineyards shape both the landscape and its architecture. Here Chardonnay has found a second home, adapting perfectly to hills blessed with enviable sun exposure and a microclimate influenced by Alpine currents. The story of this grape variety in Piedmont is one of adaptation and nobility acquired over time. Arriving from Burgundy, it learned how to absorb the secrets of the Langhe terroir and transform them into elegance. Montalbera, with its philosophy focused on excellence, has chosen to treat these grapes with almost reverential respect, removing everything superfluous in order to let the voice of the territory speak clearly. The vineyards are trained in low espalier using the classic Guyot system, a choice that limits yields in order to concentrate flavours within the bunches. In the cellar, the grapes are not destemmed before pressing, a crucial detail in preserving the freshness of the fruit intact. The real revolution, however, takes place during fermentation and ageing: the wine rests for 8 to 12 months in French oak tonneaux. The distinctive feature? The staves of these barrels are steam-bent rather than toasted. This means the oak contributes structure and softness without transferring those vanilla or smoky notes that so often mask Chardonnay’s varietal character. In the glass it displays an intense yellow colour enhanced by golden reflections. On the nose, it reveals an unusual and fascinating bouquet: notes of ripe banana flesh and medlar peel emerge alongside delicate acacia blossom. On the palate it is surprising. The sip is round and enveloping, while the finish achieves a perfect balance between vibrant vegetal acidity and a mineral streak that extends the finale dramatically. This Chardonnay is the ideal companion to porcini mushroom risotto, where the wine’s roundness marries beautifully with the creaminess of the dish, or oven-baked salmon.
Montalbera is a fine Piedmontese winery deeply connected to the family of its founder, Enrico Riccardo Morando. For three generations now, it has successfully represented its territory around the world, producing wines that are unmistakably Piedmontese in both character and style. Today the estate covers around 110 hectares spread across Monferrato and the Langhe. Among its most representative wines are the great classics of regional viticulture, starting with Barolo, but also particularly interesting oenological gems linked to the enhancement of native grape varieties such as Ruché. This grape, which many experts consider a close relative of Pinot Noir, is crafted by Montalbera into several expressions, some of which are even certified vegan. Tradition and innovation coexist perfectly here.
