Kerner is an aromatic white wine with a strong character. A super frost-resistant vine, it is grown mainly at higher altitudes, where during the day, thanks to good vineyard exposures, it can still warm up under the hot summer sun. It is, in all likelihood, a lucky cross between Schiava and Riesling grapes, from which it inherits its marked freshness and natural acidity. Its name, however, comes from the German poet Julius Kerner. The version proposed here by Cantina Martini & Shon, as tradition dictates, is bottled in the classic Rhenish style, without shoulders and with a tapered shape. Vinified in stainless steel, in the glass it has a beautiful straw yellow colour, with greenish reflections. The aromas are delicate and recall white-fleshed fruit and citrus, with a touch of nutmeg, freshly cut grass, fresh flowers, spices and even white pepper. In the mouth it is extremely gratifying. Pleasantly unbalanced towards acidity, it reveals a fine body and a fruit that is in any case very present. A white wine that can be kept for a long time in the cellar, it gives its best when paired with savoury dishes. Goose liver pate, for example. But even a mixed fry-up or a slice of smoked salmon can easily hold its own.
