Champagne Jacques Chaput - 1 rue Blanche 10200 Arrentières – Francia
Arrentières is a small geographical jewel nestled in the Côte des Bar, the southern part of Champagne, an area characterised by unique hilly landscapes and a climate with continental influences. Here, the soils are distinguished by limestone marl similar to that found in neighbouring Burgundy. In this borderland, Maison Jacques Chaput carries on a long family tradition. They know exactly how to interpret a terroir where nature imposes slow rhythms and absolute respect for the seasonal cycles. The Côte des Bar is renowned for the expressive generosity and pronounced gastronomic character of its wines. In an area historically dominated by black grape varieties, this cuvée is a splendid exception. It is, in fact, a pure Blanc de Blancs made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, with rigorous selection directly among the rows. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve the fruit’s original freshness. To soften the sharper edges of the acidity and achieve ideal roundness on the palate, the house completes malolactic fermentation in full. This is followed by tirage and an apparently endless rest in the darkness of the cellars. The classic version ages on its lees for at least 3–4 years, while some special disgorgements exceed 10 years of maturation. A decidedly moderate Brut dosage completes the wine without masking the grape variety’s natural elegance. The stream of bubbles is fine and continuous, topped by a wonderfully creamy mousse. On the nose, the initial impression is refined and layered. Fragrant notes of brioche, fresh almond, lemon peel and white flowers emerge, enriched by a mineral nuance reminiscent of chalky stone. On the palate, it is fresh, harmonious and silky. Beautiful acidity gives precision to the sip, driving the wine towards a long, clean and citrusy finish with hints of fine pastry.
The history of Maison Jacques Chaput stretches far back to 1736, when “Juste” Chaput cultivated his first vines in Fravaux. Since then, for eight generations, the family has always included at least one winegrower, keeping alive a deep-rooted bond with the land and wine. The modern turning point came in the 1950s thanks to Jacques Chaput, who decided to invest in reviving the vineyards of Arrentières, a small and picturesque village where Benedictine monks had already recognised extraordinary potential as early as the twelfth century. Jacques embraced that centuries-old heritage and transformed it into an estate of excellence, now led by his son Jacky and his grandson Jason. A genuinely family-run business, capable of combining the experience of the past with the energy and vision of the future. We are in the Côte des Bar, the southernmost area of Champagne, on the right bank of the River Aube. It is a fascinating territory, quite different from the rest of the region, characterised by a mosaic of landscapes alternating between deep plains and steep hills. The soil here is mainly composed of marl, limestone and clay dating back to the Kimmeridgian period, giving it a unique geological signature. It is precisely this “puzzle” of soils and microclimates that gives the grapes their unmistakable freshness and vitality. Today, the estate has 14 hectares of vineyards, where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the undisputed protagonists.
