Dopff & Irion – Château de Riquewihr 1 Cour du Château 68340 Riquewihr Alsazia – Francia
If you think all white wines are the same and delicate, get ready to change your mind. Just one sip of this Gewurztraminer, Cuvée René by Dopff & Irion, is enough – a true sensory explosion that fears no comparison. We are in France, in Alsace, in the picturesque village of Riquewihr, the “Pearl” of Alsace. This land boasts a thousand-year-old winemaking history, documented as far back as 1094. Nestled at the foot of the Vosges mountains, Riquewihr benefits from an exceptional microclimate. The mountains protect the vineyards from Atlantic rainfall, ensuring optimal sun exposure. This unique geo-climatic condition, combined with a rich diversity of soils, gives the grapes an unmistakable character. There are no secrets or complex blends here: Cuvée René is a 100% Gewurztraminer. A “pink-skinned” grape variety that delivers deeper colours and an unmistakable, almost exuberant aromatic profile. Its intense aromatic character is its greatest strength. Vinification is carefully managed. The grapes are gently pressed and the must is fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve freshness and aromatic richness. The wine then matures for six months on fine lees and a further six months in wood. This slow process adds complexity, softness and structure, making the palate deeper and rounder before bottling. In the glass, it shows a beautiful pale yellow colour with light green reflections, bright and clear, hinting at its freshness. On the nose, it bursts with remarkable intensity, with typical spicy notes and hints of dried grapes and pomace. Yet it is the floral echo of rose that makes the bouquet so elegant and recognisable. On the palate, this wine is powerful and expressive, with a pleasant hint of honey, despite not being sweet. It finishes with great persistence and a refreshing lift that cleanses the palate. A perfect partner for world cuisines, its spicy character is the key to outstanding pairings. Excellent with Asian, Thai or Indian cuisine, its aromatic profile and perceived sweetness soften spicy and sweet-and-sour flavours. Also worth trying with blue cheeses.
If there is a place in Europe where the history of wine blends with fairy-tale architecture, it is Alsace. And it is here, in the medieval village of Riquewihr, that Dopff & Irion is based – an institution whose heritage dates back to the 16th century. A long-standing story shaped by generations who have passed down the art of crafting elegant and refined wines, with its official turning point after the Second World War. The name Dopff & Irion comes from the union of two prominent families. Two key figures stand out. The first is Madame Jeanne Irion, one of the founders, who already at the time proved that women held a central and authoritative role in viticulture. The second is René Dopff, an enlightened producer who, after returning from the war, decided to join forces with the widow Irion. Their founding act was both symbolic and concrete: the purchase of the historic Château de Riquewihr, built in 1549 and surrounded by vineyards. This is not only the company’s headquarters but the very embodiment of its philosophy: to honour Alsatian tradition while always striving for the highest quality. René Dopff was a true pioneer in Alsace, focusing from the outset on uncompromising quality, including significantly reducing vineyard yields. He was also among the first to firmly link a grape variety to its specific terroir. This is no small matter: it means that every bottle of Dopff & Irion is a faithful portrait of the land it comes from. Today, the estate manages its vineyards with great respect for the environment, adopting practices that preserve soil fertility and limit impact. It is not a passing trend, but a commitment from those who know that great wine can only come from healthy, living soil.
