Conte d’Attimis Maniago. Via Sottomonte, 21 33042 Buttrio (UD), Italy
A surprising and territorial wine. We are talking about an interesting Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, DOC Friuli Colli Orientali, produced and offered here by Casali Maniago. Refosco is a grape variety deeply linked to this area of Italy, the only one where it succeeds in producing wines with fine character and personality. After the harvest, the grapes are crushed and the must obtained is left in contact with the skins at a controlled temperature, inside modern automatic steel winemakers. This allows the winery technicians to plan numerous pumping over to encourage the transfer of colour from the skins to the must. This is followed by gentle pressing and the two phases of fermentation, alcoholic and malolactic. After racking, the wine is left to rest before bottling. This is followed by a further period of bottle ageing before release. Intense ruby red in colour, with violet reflections, the nose reveals a red wine characterised by an intense, vinous bouquet, reminiscent of wild blackberries and small red fruits in jam. In the mouth, it is forthright, with an almost perfect correspondence to what was perceived previously. Pleasantly tannic and well-balanced, this red wine of the territory guarantees remarkable freshness and promises longevity and ease of drinking. Excellent with roasts, it can also be served with the classic baked veal shank or, when the temperature drops, with a good stew with polenta. For lovers of traditional Friulian cuisine, this red wine is also often served with Jota, the tasty soup made with sauerkraut and beans, with potatoes and smoked pork ribs.
Casali Maniago is a marvellous estate extending over some 110 hectares, almost entirely planted with vines. And it has belonged to the same family for over 500 years. Certain documents, in fact, attest that on 15 February 1585, following a marriage, the family of the Counts d'Attimis-Maniago received this magnificent piece of land as a dowry. We are in Buttrio, in the province of Udine, 100 km east of Venice, in the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC area. A hilly environment with a strong vocation for viticulture, managed today by Count Alberto, the last descendant of the noble family. On a clear day, from the top of these hills it is possible to see the Adriatic Sea on the horizon, which guarantees a beneficial and constant ventilation to the vines. The Julian Alps behind, on the other hand, shelter them from the cold currents coming from the north, creating a unique environment for growing vines. Today, the estate, which continues to be run according to tradition, also applies the most modern dictates of integrated and sustainable agriculture.
