What a beautiful nose this suggests of dried tea leaves, earth, tobacco, cedar, five spice, dried cherries, orange zest and Christmas spices. The tannins have a brambly quality to them, but they slip effortlessly into place, around finely indented creases of redplum and redcherry flavors. Long and composed, this is a silky, balanced, delightful offering. What a wine from the only cooperative in Montalcino!
The 2015 is a "5 star" rated vintage, the highest rating recognized by experts and critics around the world. It is thanks to the extraordinary quality of the grapes harvested, which ripened perfectly thanks to a clement climate with a very hot summer, but with just the right amount of rain. The harvest of this Brunello, in particular, took place between September 21 and October 10, 2015. Strictly manual harvesting followed by traditional red vinification, with maceration of the skins for almost a month at a controlled temperature. For the subsequent ageing phase, however, large 50-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks were used, where the wine rested for over 30 months. A wine with good body and personality, thanks to its soft, ripe tannins and the complexity of its aromas. At dinner it goes perfectly with savoury meat dishes or with well matured cheeses.
Cantina di Montalcino is a unique reality of its kind. Also from an architectural point of view. The modern profile of the Cantina, in fact, recalls that of the beautiful Sienese hills. A structure so interesting that it entered by right the restricted circuit of Toscana Wine Architecture that brings together the 14 wineries of distinction and design in the region. Founded in 1970, it is still the only cooperative winery in the Brunello area. 94 passionate members, small farms, who look after 160 hectares of vineyards, between 120 and 650 metres above sea level. So an average of less than 2 hectares each. Production is decidedly limited, especially when compared to the numbers of many cooperative wineries. We are talking about 76 thousand bottles in total, including Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva. Few but, you can be sure, all damn good.
