If you like red wines that are not too structured but fresh and pleasantly fruity, sooner or later you have to try a Santa Maddalena, a typical South Tyrolean wine made from the autochthonous Schiava and Lagrein grapes. Reds that in some cases manage to reach peaks of absolute excellence, thanks to the skill of local winemakers and their modern wine cellars. A fine example is this Santa Maddalena proposed by the Cantina Bolzano, great drinkability and elegance, due to the aging of part of the wine in large oak barrels. In the glass it is a beautiful bright ruby red colour. The nose has notes of fresh fruit, including cherries and raspberries, then floral notes of violets and roses and the typical scent of bitter almonds and marzipan. In the mouth it is full-bodied, velvety, round and of medium structure. It is the right wine to accompany the typical South Tyrolean snack, with cold cuts and cheese. But for those who want to dare more, it should definitely be tried with pizza as well.
Cantina Bolzano was founded in 1908, when 30 local winegrowers decided to unite their production under a common banner. Today the partners cultivate 340 hectares of vineyards between 200 and 1000 metres above sea level: passion, experience and commitment allow Cantina Bolzano to produce highly successful wines. New and ancient knowledge is well represented by the main headquarters of Cantina Bolzano: a majestic cube covered with bronze-coloured aluminum sheets, with engravings and openings that resemble a stylized vine leaf. A nice way to tell their story, also from an aesthetic point of view: past and future have common roots, and from these roots come wines of recognized quality and disturbing charm.
