Abrigo Giovanni - Via Santa Croce 9 12055 Diano D'alba (CN)
It is called Garabei and is a Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba DOCG, Superiore. Abrigo Giovanni proposes it, indicating it as 'the highest expression of Dolcetto' among those produced by the family. Complex and elegant, Garabei (its creators assure) has great ageing potential. A curiosity about the name. Garabei is the name of the estate's oldest plot, whose planting dates back to before 1968. Over 50-year-old vines with different rootstocks and clones give Garabei great complexity. The vineyard is located on a very steep hill. Here the soil is poor and dry with great variability in terms of materials. Harvested by hand, as is customary for the beautiful Piedmontese winery, followed by traditional vinification in temperature-controlled steel tanks. For the subsequent ageing phase, the wine remains in cement vats until the summer following the harvest, undergoing only a few racking for natural decantation and stabilisation. Then, after bottling, the wine matures for a further 6 months in the bottle before release. Intense ruby red with violet reflections typical of Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba. The nose reveals a scent of cherries in spirit, wild black cherries and red fruits. In the mouth it is powerful and at the same time elegant, with dense and enveloping tannins. The good natural acidity preserves the flavour and supports a soft and persistent finish. Excellent as an antipasto, this Dolcetto goes well with mature hams, hard cheeses, stuffed pasta, grilled vegetables and light main courses.
An authentic family-run business. This is the Giovanni Abrigo company, named after its founder, which has been cultivating land and enhancing the products of the Langhe since 1968. Back in the day, Giovanni and Maria ran the typical Langa farm, raising Piemontese beef cattle and small farmyard animals. Added to these were the cultivation of cereal fields, hazelnut groves, orchards and, of course, vineyards for the production of Dolcetto wine. Development arrived in the mid-1980s, when son Giorgio, having completed his agronomy studies, began to take over the cultivation of hazelnut groves and vineyards. The latter were planted on the company's best exposed and most suitable land. Then, with the arrival of the new millennium, it is their children who join the company. This gives new life and stimulus, and leads, in 2019, to the completion of the construction of the new ageing cellar, which unites and completes the premises built by the different generations.
