The star variety here is called Pokalca, or Rebula Nera, in Slovenia. But there are also those who call it by the all-Italian name of Schioppettino. However, it is an old red variety that has been very common since the Middle Ages but was in danger of disappearing altogether during the last century. It has been rediscovered and enhanced precisely by Erzetic who offers it here in a pleasantly dry version. The grapes come from relatively young vineyards planted in 2012. We are in Upper Brda, where plants are grown on terraces to fully enjoy exposure to the sun's rays. An organic wine, it comes from a manual harvest that takes place in early October. After vinification, this red rests partly in large oak barrels and partly in barriques for a period of at least 12 months. A dark ruby wine with violet hues, it is a full-bodied and complex red wine. The nose is reminiscent of violets and pepper. But also leather and rosehip jam. The mouth reveals a mature wine, well supported, however, by youthful energy. Pleasantly fruity and spicy, it has fine, soft tannins. A wine that loves richly flavored foods, it can be offered with any meat, from simple beef to more unusual ones, such as venison. For lovers of daring combinations, there are also those who offer it alongside a dark chocolate dessert.
