A creamy and juicy red with cedar and meat to the plum and berry undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied, fruity and flavorful. Hints of fudge and hazelnuts. Very drinkable now, but better after 222.

  • Wine Enthusiast 95

Rose, redberry, wild herb and bakingspice aromas take center stage on this fragrant, elegant red. Loaded with finesse, the fullbodied palate delivers strawberry compote, star anise and cinnamon alongside a mineral note evoking rusty nail. Taut polished tannins and bright acidity provide the ageworthy framework. Drink 2024–2046. KERIN O’KEEFE

Barolo DOCG "Vigna La Rosa" 2016
  • In the big table of historic Barolo vintages, 2016 is listed with the highest score. "One of the greatest of the last 10 years", even. The weather conditions were rather clement, though not ideal, but the Nebbiolo nevertheless managed to reach perfect ripeness between the end of September and the first half of October. The result is wines with excellent balance, great bouquet and above all structure. One can therefore assume that this Barolo DOCG Vigna La Rosa 2016 is destined for long, very long cellar aging. One of those wines that we can buy today as an investment and forget in the cellar, cool and dark, for the next 25 or 30 years. When we go to find it again, we are almost certain to discover an incredible bottle. Unique and inimitable. Matured in medium-capacity oak casks (between 30 and 50 hectolitres), this Vigna La Rosa di Fontanafredda today has a beautiful ruby red colour, with garnet highlights. The bouquet is ample, gentle but intense, with clear scents of withered rose, violet, tobacco, undergrowth and light vanilla. In the mouth, however, the texture of the tannins is dense and thick. Soft, almost velvety, it explodes as the minutes pass into a sensation of fruit well balanced by acidic freshness. The finish is long, almost infinite, prolonging the pleasure of each sip by several minutes. If we have it in our cellar, or if we will have it in a few days' time, let us organise a high quality lunch or dinner to honour it in the best possible way. It is an ideal accompaniment to important meat dishes and medium- or long-aged cheeses, but it can also pleasantly accompany simple conversation at the end of a meal.

Founded by the first King of Italy in 1858. This inscription on the Fontanafredda website is enough to give a sense of a company that to define as "historic" is almost reductive. Fontanafredda was born out of a love story. It was in fact a gift from Vittorio Emanuele II to his beloved Rosa Vercellana, the famous "bella Rosina". Beyond this ante litteram gossip, however, Fontanafredda has always been a point of reference for regional and Italian viticulture in general. In fact, many curious records belong to this winery. The first vineyard in Barolo was purchased in 1866, and the first vinification took place in 1870. In 1886, Fontanafredda's Barolo wines reached America, and in 1887, the first cement tanks in Europe were built. Finally, 1959 saw the production of the first classic method sparkling wine, the forerunner of Alta Langa DOCG. The last step in the glorious history of this winery, after its acquisition by Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo, is in 2018. Since that year, the company has been producing certified organic wines. Today, Fontanafredda, which exports to over 60 countries around the world, can count on a complex of 120 hectares of vineyards. And in its cellars there are over 2.5 million bottles of Barolo waiting to be put on the market. Long live... Fontanafredda!
