Fontanafredda, Via Alba 15 - Serralunga d'Alba (CN) Italia
Ampelio, Fontanafredda's Chardonnay, comes from the heart of the Langhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and land of great wines. A white wine characterised by beautiful freshness and great structure, ideal for those looking for a versatile wine with character. The grapes come from vineyards between Alba, Treiso, Serralunga d'Alba and Diano d'Alba, on well-exposed hills at an average altitude. Here, the soils are rich in calcareous and sandy marl, ideal for growing Chardonnay. After pressing, the must is separated from the skins and cooled. Fermentation takes place 70% in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and 30% in new French oak barriques. At the end of the process, the wine is aged for about 6 months, during which time malolactic fermentation is also completed. The two parts are then blended and bottled. In the glass, Ampelio has a beautiful straw yellow colour with greenish reflections. The nose is complex but fresh, with intense fruity notes and pleasant hints of vanilla. On the palate, it is savoury, dry but soft at the same time, full, harmonious and long-lasting. Ampelio reaches its peak after a few months in the bottle and has good ageing potential. Serve with appetisers, fish, shellfish, cheese, poultry, white fish and vegetarian dishes.
Founded by the first King of Italy in 1858. This statement on the Fontanafredda website is enough to convey the essence of a company that can hardly be described as “historic”. Fontanafredda was born out of a love story. It was donated by Vittorio Emanuele II to his beloved Rosa Vercellana, the famous “bella Rosina”. Beyond this ante litteram gossip, however, Fontanafredda has always been a benchmark for regional and Italian viticulture in general. In fact, this winery holds many curious records. The first vineyard in Barolo was purchased in 1866 and the first wine was produced in 1870. In 1886, Fontanafredda's Barolo wines arrived in America and in 1887 the first concrete tanks in Europe were built. Finally, in 1959, the first classic method sparkling wine was produced, the precursor of Alta Langa DOCG. The last milestone in the glorious history of this winery, after its acquisition by Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo, was in 2018. Since then, the company has been producing certified organic wines. Today, Fontanafredda exports to over 60 countries worldwide and has 120 hectares of vineyards. Its cellars hold over 2.5 million bottles of Barolo waiting to be released onto the market. Long live Fontanafredda!
