The Damilano 2016 Barolo Cannubi shows depth and a profound nature. This is the DNA of the Cannubi cru, maybe the most celebrated in the appellation with mildly compact, well-draining sandy soils (actually, a mix of 45% sand, 35% silt and 20% clay, to be precise). These conditions contribute to the dark concentration and the firm textural support found here. These assets are particularly apparent in this classic vintage. Dark fruit and dried cherry cede to earthy truffle and licorice. Of these various single-vineyard expressions, the tight tannins on this Cannubi definitely suggest a long drinking window. This wine is my favorite in this flight from Damilano, and this vintage of 40,000 bottles is distinguished by its sheer excellence.
The fruit feels so comfortable here, in the ripe-red zone; it ranges from cherry kernel to chocolate-coated red plums to glazed cherries. Integrated hints of bark and sandalwood. Full-bodied with strapping tannins and muscular, imposing structure and power. Notwithstanding, everything is in striking balance and delivered with remarkable precision and grit. Drink from 2026.
Aromas of ripe black-skinned fruit, menthol, leather and tobacco slowly appear in the glass. Chewy and concentrated, the palate shows dried black cherry, licorice and espresso alongside taut close-grained tannins that grip the close. Drink 2024–2031. KERIN O’KEEFE
Cannubi is considered the Grand Cru of Barolo, an extraordinary wine in terms of style and elegance. This is due to the absolute quality of the grapes from the hill of the same name, where the soils are poorly developed, consisting of greyish-white clay marls on the surface. In the part owned by the Damilano family, in particular, the soil has a high percentage of sand (up to 45%) that gives the grapes intense aromas of cherry, plum and tobacco, rose and violet in evolution. Intense and lively in colour, Barolo Cannubi by Damilano presents itself in the glass with an intense polyphenolic concentration. At first glance, its ruby-garnet red colour with a limited presence of orange reflections is striking. The bouquet is particularly broad and enveloping, with clear fruity notes of cherry and plum and evolved hints of tobacco, liquorice and cocoa. In the mouth, on the other hand, one immediately discovers a pleasantly harmonious and dry wine, with soft tannins and clear sensations of body and fullness. A Barolo that is fabulous even today but that is in no hurry to leave its bottle. A wine of this calibre has the capacity to continue to mature for a long time in the cellar. It only requires a suitable environment for its rest. Let's wake it up in 10 or 15 years.... It will still be able to give us great, great satisfaction. Truffles, braised meats and rich roasts. Damilano is one of Barolo's historic wineries with ancient traditions. Over a hundred years old, even.
