Champagne Charles Westler - 21, boulevard de Beauséjour 75016 Paris, France
Maison Charles Westler works in north-eastern France, where calcareous soils made up of deep chalk create a perfect underground microclimate. We are in Champagne, after all, and this special soil acts as a natural water regulator for the roots of the vine. The continental climate, cold and breezy, pushes the plants to develop bunches with an enviable acid profile. This is a crucial factor in guaranteeing the longevity and typical final freshness of every sip. The blend behind this label shows a clear prevalence of black grape varieties. There is 62% Pinot Noir, which brings structure, vigour and depth. The 26% Pinot Meunier adds a pleasant, immediate fruity roundness. Finally, 12% Chardonnay completes the work, adding that dose of elegance and citrus finesse that gives lift to the whole body. Both alcoholic fermentation and the subsequent malolactic fermentation are carried out entirely in stainless-steel tanks. This technique makes it possible to preserve the original liveliness of the fruit intact. The wine then rests in the darkness of the cellar for a period of ageing on the lees lasting from 2 to 3 years, well above the minimum requirements set by the regulations. In the glass, this Champagne reveals its bright and magnetic golden colour. The perlage is made up of fine, light bubbles, impeccably distributed. On the nose, rich aromas of tempting, fleshy fruit are immediately followed by inviting notes of pastry and fragrant bread crust. Hints of honey and toasted nuances bear witness to the extraordinary work carried out by time during its stay in the cellar. On the palate, it shows overwhelming generosity, balanced by a subtlety rich in savoury nuances. The sip is fruity, refined and made incredibly soft by the long rest on the lees.
In the varied panorama of Champagne, there is an invisible thread linking the most interesting estates: the ability to balance great French tradition with a contemporary and accessible vision. Maison Charles Westler, with its historic base in the heart of Châtillon-sur-Marne, is the perfect manifesto of this approach. Its philosophy rests on three pillars that are as simple as they are absolute: rigorous respect for the land, the enhancement of the human factor and, above all, the value of time. For Charles Westler, true elegance is not something that can be improvised, but a goal reached only by allowing wines the time to evolve and tell their own story. We are in the celebrated Vallée de la Marne, one of the most fascinating and characteristic sub-regions in all of Champagne. Here, the landscape is dominated by gentle hills that follow the course of the Marne river, and the microclimate proves ideal for precision viticulture. In this area, the soils are rich in clay, marl and sandy sediments, a magical combination that gives the grapes natural roundness, intense aromas and pulpy fruit, creating a very precise stylistic signature, decidedly different from the vibrant chalky verticality of other areas of the appellation. To express this terroir at its best, Charles Westler focuses on a rigorous oenological selection that brings together the distinctive features of the different grape varieties of the area. Although Pinot Meunier has historically been the undisputed king of the Vallée de la Marne thanks to its softness and immediacy, the Maison knows how to play ahead by masterfully combining the structure and character of Pinot Noir with the unmistakable fine and elegant touch of Chardonnay. But the real secret of their assemblages is the skilful use of “vins de réserve”, wines from previous vintages. In the cellar, the percentage of these historic reserves often reaches 30–35%. This is a very precise and costly production choice, allowing continuity to be given to the Maison’s style, enriching each cuvée with evolved, deep and layered notes capable of offering a complex drinking experience from the very first sip.
