You cannot think of South Tyrol without imagining a fresh glass of Traminer Aromatico, or rather Gewürztraminer, with its unmistakable array of rose petals, lychees, cloves and tropical fruits. An indigenous South Tyrolean grape variety with an international reputation, Cantina Merano's Traminer Aromatico takes full advantage of the special microclimate of its vineyards and the careful reduction in yield. Vineyards between Lagundo, Tirolo, Labers and Lana, at between 400 and 500 metres above sea level, with vines that are on average between 10 and 15 years old. In the cellar, the wine-making process begins with a 12-hour cold maceration phase, followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation in small stainless steel tanks and maturation on the lees for 6 months. In the glass it has a beautiful, lively straw colour with musky reflections. The bouquet, ample and enveloping, recalls flowers, with notes of roses, mint and lemon balm. On the palate, however, it is harmoniously fresh, with a nice softness and a well-balanced aroma. There are those who like it as an aperitif and those who appreciate its natural softness to contrast with pleasantly spicy recipes such as those typical of Asian cuisine. For the most pleasure-loving, however, the right combination is undoubtedly with shellfish.
Sometimes a few numbers are enough to understand everything. In the case of Cantina Merano, based in Marlengo, on the hills overlooking the city, the numbers are simple. Between 300 and 900 metres above sea level, the vineyards enjoy perfect exposure and the beneficial temperature range that every wine lover seeks like the Holy Grail. Over 1940 hours of sunshine per year are enjoyed by the vineyards here. There are 16 grape varieties in the vineyards, which produce 60% of the red wines (quality) and 40% of the white wines. Of these varieties, three are indigenous to the region and produce wines with an unmistakable character. The winery produces a total of 1.3 million bottles a year. The secret? Hard manual work, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, to ensure careful and gentle processing of each grape variety. In the cellar, in particular, tradition and innovation are combined with expertise, foresight and care. The philosophy that guides every choice is that of "Less is more", because the character of the grapes must still be recognisable in the glass of wine.
