Champagne Canard-Duchene - 1, rue Edmond Canard 51500 Ludes, Francia
A romantic nineteenth-century love story. Cuvée Léonie Iconic Brut takes its name from Léonie Duchêne, the young winegrower who married the cooper Victor Canard in 1868, founding one of the most iconic and fascinating maisons in the whole of Champagne. We are in Ludes, a charming village perched on the northern slope of the Montagne de Reims, where the chalky subsoil meets a cool continental climate. This geographical position is a true blessing for black grape varieties, which are able to develop pronounced acidity and aristocratic elegance here. There is no need for a birthday or special anniversary to pop this cork. The Maison’s philosophy is precisely to bring accessible luxury and the style of French sparkling wine into everyday life, without ever compromising on the rigorous quality imposed by the appellation regulations. Pinot Noir accounts for 40% of the cuvée and provides its backbone, bringing structure, body and remarkable persistence. Chardonnay makes up 35%, adding brightness, finesse and the citrus freshness essential for drinkability. Finally, 25% Pinot Meunier completes the blend, contributing immediate fruitiness, roundness and pronounced youthful appeal. The first fermentation takes place entirely in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve the fragrance of the fruit. The real secret of this cuvée, however, is time: after tirage, the bottles rest in the darkness of the chalk cellars for a minimum of three years, well beyond the legal minimum. The process concludes with disgorgement and a skilfully calibrated Brut dosage of less than 7 grams per litre. In the glass, it displays a pale golden-yellow colour, enhanced by a fine, dense and continuous stream of bubbles. On the nose, the impact is intense and captivating. Aromas of ripe yellow fruit, such as peach and apricot, emerge immediately, quickly giving way to warmer and more complex notes of fragrant brioche, honey and toasted almonds. On the palate, it reveals a creamy and harmonious profile. The structure is complex yet incredibly smooth, defined by citrus freshness that balances the notes of pastry and candied citrus fruit. The finish is long, clean and remarkably delicate. Fantastic as an aperitif to open an important dinner. Excellent with raw seafood or tempura prawns.
There are stories in the world of wine that seem made for the cinema, and Maison Canard-Duchêne is a perfect example. It all began in 1859 among the vineyards of the celebrated Montagne de Reims, where the paths of Victor Canard, a skilled cooper, and Léonie Duchêne, a young woman born into a family of winegrowers, crossed. It was true love at first sight, leading to marriage and, only a few years later in 1868, to the decision to unite not only their lives but also their surnames and expertise to found their own Champagne house. At a time when the role of women in the wine world was often confined to the home, Léonie immediately took on a central role in production and tasting, bringing the innate touch of finesse that still distinguishes the Maison’s sparkling wines today. Unlike most of the great historic Champagne houses, which chose to establish their headquarters in the urban centres of Reims or Épernay, Canard-Duchêne preferred to remain surrounded by nature. The estate is located in Ludes, a charming village perched on a hillside in the heart of the Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park. Here, surrounded by a centuries-old park filled with majestic trees and actively promoting biodiversity, lie the estate’s historic underground cellars. Hand-carved directly into the chalk during the nineteenth century, they extend for six kilometres and provide the perfect temperature conditions for the slow and precious maturation of Champagne.
