Costa di Annibale, the wine proposed here by Isimbarda, is one of the standard-bearers of the Oltrepò Pavese. It is, in fact, a pleasant red wine produced with pure Croatina grapes. A vine that, like the noble Pinot Noir, on the hills surrounding the area south of Milan, has always been cultivated for its generosity and for the pleasantness of the wines produced from it. Specifically, this Costa di Annibale comes from grapes, carefully selected and subjected to a traditional vinification. Its strength is undoubtedly its immediacy and, in fact, it does not undergo a long aging process but is bottled as early as the spring following the harvest. Here it rests for a short period of about 3 months, and then it is made available on the market. The Il Costa di Annibale isn't always produced, though. At Isimbarda, in fact, they decided to reserve only the grapes harvested in deserving vintages, those capable of giving the right concentration. Its colour is intense ruby red, with strong violet hues that testify to its youth. Intense and penetrating bouquet, with clear hints of plum and cherry. In the mouth it is soft, full, with a nice noticeable tannicity but not such as to affect the balance. The finish is long and it is characterized by a particular bitterish aftertaste.
Isimbarda's history is that of ancient nobility of wine but much more as well. The name, for example, derives from the Marquis Isimbardi, a patrician family that owned the Santa Giuletta estate at the end of the 18th century. Later, in the 19th century, it was Don Luigi Isimbardi who followed its development, being a precursor of modern viticultural techniques. The family coat of arms is still present in the logo of the winery, which has been managed by Luigi Meroni since 1991. In the countryside the care of the vineyards is almost maniacal, with perfectly grassed rows that are tended like gardens. In the winery there is no lack of technology, and it is used to get the best out of the beautiful grapes of the Oltrepò from which wines of great personality and stylistic precision are obtained. From Bonarda to Pinot Noir, there are few Isimbarda wines that have not received awards and recognition around the world.
