"Le Vie del Mare" Maremma Toscana Rosso DOC 2020
  • It is called Le Vie del Mare and is one of the wines offered by Cantina Cooperativa dei Vignaioli del Morellino. On the label, it is indicated as Maremma Toscana Rosso DOC, and comes from an all-French blend of 55% Merlot grapes, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. After all, the Tuscan Maremma is a land of Sangiovese, but also, and perhaps above all, of international vines that here, on poor soils and with a warm, ventilated climate, manage to reach perfect ripeness. Specifically, the grapes used for the production of this red wine come from vineyards located between 100 and 200 metres above sea level. Plants 10 to 15 years old ripen at different times. First half of September for the Merlot, end of September for the Cabernet. Harvesting, in each case, only begins when the grapes reach perfect phenolic ripeness and after picking, the bunches are protected with carbonic snow. After fermentation, malolactic fermentation of the Cabernets takes place in barriques, where the wine then matures in contact with its fine lees for approximately two months. A fresh wine to be drunk young, within a few years of the harvest, it has a beautiful full ruby colour in the glass. On the nose, fruity notes, hints of underbrush and spicy accents. In the mouth, however, it is pleasantly dry and appropriately rounded. A beautifully structured red, it is well balanced with ripe, silky tannins. Meat-based first and second courses are the natural pairing for this Maremma red. Excellent with grilled meat and medium-aged cheeses.

That of Cantina del Morellino is a fine story of successful cooperation in Tuscany. Founded in 1972, in fact, the cooperative winery of the Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano was born thanks to the initiative of a small group of local producers, aware that in an increasingly large and global market, joining forces could really make the difference. That the initiative was the right one is proved by the fact that in the space of a few years that small group of visionaries has gradually expanded, without losing the helm and without compromising. In the 1980s, in fact, when many cooperatives decided to concentrate on quantity, the Vignaioli del Morellino continued to focus on quality. Huge investments have therefore been made over the years, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Investments that, over time, have fortunately paid off. Today there are about 170 members of the winery, who work about 700 hectares of vineyards with passion and skill. Excellent quality, at excellent prices. This is, 50 years after its foundation, the cooperative winery of the Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano. Certainly one of the most interesting production realities of the entire Maremma.
