Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2016 - Santa Sofia

Amarone della Valpolicella, today one of the most important Italian red wines, few people know that it actually originates from the evolution of Recioto, a pleasantly sweet red wine. At one time, in fact, "only" Recioto was produced. Amarone, in fact, is a relatively modern wine, whose marketing only began in the 1950s. The first Amarone di Santa Sofia was produced in 1964 by Giancarlo Begnoni. The one proposed here is an Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico, i.e. produced only with grapes from the historic area of the appellation. The vineyards of Santa Sofia, in particular, are located on stony hills in the municipalities of Negrar, Fumane, San Pietro in Cariano and Marano, all to the north of Verona. Corvina and Corvinone in clear majority (about 70%), the blend is completed with Rondinella grapes. After harvesting, the bunches, delicately handled by expert operators, undergo a slow drying process for a period of between 90 and 120 days. Deep ruby red, almost impenetrable, with garnet reflections, this spectacular Veronese red wine presents a bouquet that is decisive yet delicate at the same time, with refined hints of ripe cherries, dark currants and dried plums. Then there are soft memories of milk chocolate, sensations of rhubarb and balsamic notes of mentholated tobacco. An extremely refined, harmonious and elegant bouquet. In the mouth it is pleasantly juicy, with a pleasant tannic texture. The alcoholic warmth is well balanced by an invigorating citrus freshness. An important wine, but "drinkable" at the same time. Amarone calls for important dishes, such as jugged hare, stews and braised beef in red wine. Obviously it is the ingredient of the most classic risotto, where it succeeds in being both a perfect ingredient and a perfect match.

It is in a beautiful position, i.e. on a slightly rising hill that covers part of the town and lies between two small valleys: all the surrounding hills are very pleasant and filled with good water. With these words Andrea Palladio described the places where today the Santa Sofia winery is located. We are in Valpolicella, the land of wine. The wine cellars are located under and next to Villa Santa Sofia, formerly known as Villa Serego. Begun in 1560 to a design by Andrea Palladio, the villa was commissioned by Marcantonio Serego, a highly respected nobleman married to Ginevra Alighieri. Santa Sofia, a historic vineyard of the area (in the truest sense of the word), is now owned by Giancarlo Begnoni. On around 40 hectares of vineyards, wines with a classic and traditional style are produced. After all, in a place like this, it would be impossible not to.
