Inferno Valtellina Supeirore DOCG 2018 - Rainoldi

The Inferno sub-zone covers about 60 hectares and is one of the most scenically striking areas of the entire Valtellina. Compared to other areas, such as Grumello and Sassella with vineyards that extend over steep slopes for hundreds of metres, the terraces in the Inferno area are more concentrated. They range from a minimum of 350 to a maximum of 500 metres. The name Inferno refers to the special climatic conditions enjoyed here. The sun reflects on the rocks and guarantees a widespread warmth that allows the grapes to ripen fully, with the appearance of significant tannic power. Super-traditional vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel and secondary fermentation, or malolactic fermentation, carried out entirely before spring, this Valtellina DOCG matures in large 25 and 56 hectolitre barrels for almost two years before being re-assembled and bottled for the final stage of refinement in glass. Intense ruby red in colour, the nose shows fine and complex aromas at the same time, with notes of currant, walnut, black pepper and Alpine herbs. In the mouth, however, it is fresh, harmonious and pleasantly persistent. A wine of good longevity, it is in no hurry to be uncorked. The important thing is to choose the right combination. Obviously meat-based. Excellent with polenta accompanied by a tasty stew or with the good cheeses typical of the region.

Aldo Rainoldi began his profession as a wine merchant in Chiuro, in the heart of the Valtellina, in 1925. We are living in a dark period. A time when those who could leave the valley to seek their fortune elsewhere. There is no work and life is definitely hard. Fortunately, Aldo's fortunes seemed to be going in a different direction, so much so that in the mid-1950s his son Giuseppe decided to join him in the family business. The turning point came when the decision was made to stop buying wine and buy grapes directly to produce it according to one's own taste. This was also the moment when they began to sell the wine in bottles and no longer in chestnut barrels. The direct consequence was an expansion of the market, first in Italy and then abroad. At the end of the 1990s, a new Aldo joined the company. He is the grandson of Giuseppe, in the sign of family continuity. Today Rainoldi is one of the most appreciated wine cellars in Valtellina.
