Toscana IGT Bianco, Poggio alle Gazze reveals freshness and stubbornness. It is one of the good wines produced by the Ornellaia estate, owned by the Frescobaldi family. It is made from an unusual blend of Sauvignon Blanc, for the most part, with Vermentino, Viognier and Verdicchio in small parts. Each variety perfectly calibrated by the expert hand of the winery's oenologist, Olga Fusari. Grapes harvested by hand in 15 kg crates in the early hours of the morning, are immediately cooled on arrival in the cellar, to keep all their aromatic potential intact. Careful selection follows and the whole bunches are subjected to a slow, soft pressing. The must thus obtained is divided into two parts. Some ferment in barriques, partly new and partly used, others in steel and cement tanks. At the end of the transformation, the wine rests in contact with its lees for 6 months, with regular bâtonnage throughout the period. The final blend is made immediately before bottling, at which point the wine undergoes a further 12 months of bottle ageing before release. Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia displays a brilliant straw yellow colour. The nose is complex and seductive, with beautiful citrus notes, exotic fruits, white flowers, accompanied also by scents of cut grass and asparagus. In the mouth, then, the wine reveals itself to be ample and beautifully fresh. The finish is long and savoury, perfectly identifying with its terroir. A wine of fine character and great personality, it accompanies meat and fish dishes without distinction. To appreciate it at its best, however, a spaghettino alla bottarga is... 'its death'!
'The story of Ornellaia,' reads the winery's website, 'is one of vision and determination. Founded in 1981, Ornellaia immediately embarked on the road to excellence. It does so by relying on unique and vocated soils of ancient marine, alluvial and volcanic origin. The vineyards are divided into small parcels "each one is a microcosm, with its own identity and language". All around, the Mediterranean maquis reigns free. Among the varieties the winery focuses on are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the real stars of the estate. With them Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot. Then Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Manseng, Viognier and the 'local' Verdicchio and Vermentino. Owned by the Frescobaldi family, 40 years after its foundation, today the name Ornellaia is one of the symbols of good Italian living in the world and represents timeless elegance.
