Luzano is an interesting Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico DOC Superiore produced by Marotti Campi in the Morro d'Alba area, in the province of Ancona. Pure Verdicchio grapes, harvested by hand when fully ripe, around mid-September. Selected on the plant and delicately placed in boxes, the grapes are quickly delivered to the winery for processing. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and, after fermentation, the wine matures on its noble lees for five months. This is followed by six months of resting in steel tanks and at least three in the bottle. Straw yellow in colour with greenish highlights, this Verdicchio presents delicate and fine aromas. It is all about the freshness of wild flowers and the typical notes of bitter almonds that characterise the finish. On the palate, however, it is dry, savoury, mineral, with fruity notes of green apple. Here, too, the finish is pleasantly almondy. Excellent as an aperitif, this is the bottle to uncork if the menu includes a nice risotto. It is also suitable to accompany main courses of fish or white meat.
Marotti Campi is a 100% family business. Let us start with this fact. The origin is lost in time. What is certain is that in the mid-19th century the Marotti family bought the property in the Sant'Amico district of Morro d'Alba and built the villa there as the centre of the sharecropping company. Little has changed since then. The family is still the same and even in the cellar and in the countryside many of the employees are the heirs of the first workers. There is no better guarantee of continuity. 120 hectares of property, about 53 of which are vineyards, with hilly profiles and an average height of about 180 metres above sea level. Lacrima and Verdicchio, with plantings from 35 to 10 years old, are the most cultivated vines. Then a small portion of Montepulciano, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon are used for the production of non-DOC wines. The decidedly modern wine cellar was built in 1999. It is functional and self-sufficient also in terms of energy, thanks to solar panels installed on the roof in 2010. Respect for nature and the environment are central to the values of the company and the family.
