Martinenga Barbaresco DOCG 2018 - Tenuta Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grèsy

Elegance and style are not lacking either in the Marchesi di Grésy company or in its wines. And here we have a real gem. Barbaresco Martinenga is the result of Nebbiolo grapes harvested on the company's main estate. This is followed by traditional red wine vinification, with maceration with the cap emerged for about ten days at a controlled temperature, and with the cap submerged for almost a month. The wine is aged in barriques, partly new and partly first and second passage. After the first year, then, the wine is moved to other Slavonian oak barrels to complete its slow refinement. This is followed by bottling and another year of rest in the cellar before it can be considered definitively ready to be put on the market. Nebbiolo, as we know, needs time to reach the right level of pleasure and all these precautions are indispensable if the goal is to produce a wine with great personality. In the glass, it has a beautiful straw yellow colour with light orange reflections. The nose is intense, with hints of plum and cherry that blend with balsamic nuances of mint, tea leaves, dried flowers and blonde pipe tobacco. In the mouth it is fine and elegant, with velvety tannins, full body and great persistence.

Tenute Cisa Asinari of the Marchesi di Grèsy. The name alone is enough to bring a certain awe. Here, in fact, we are looking at the true nobility of Piedmontese wine. A very long history that has its roots at the end of the 18th century when the Martinenga estate was donated to the Grèsy family. From then on, the history of the company tells of marriages, acquisitions and lots and lots of passion for the territory. The current Marchesi di Grèsy winery was officially founded in 1973. It was created to produce wine from the grapes of the Cisa Asinari estate, already a family property. Today the group has four separate estates, although the main one is still Martinenga, in the heart of Barbaresco. The others are those of Monte Aribaldo, in Treiso, La Serra, in Cassine, and Monte Colombo, also adjacent to La Serra. Today the company can count on a total of about 45 hectares of vineyards, distributed in different estates of the Langhe and Monferrato. Energy saving and reduction of environmental impact are two fixed points of the entire production.

This wine pours from the bottle with a light ruby or garnet color. The Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy 2017 Barbaresco Martinenga puts on a fascinating aromatic performance that starts off with candied fruit (like cherry Sucrets) followed by a touch of medicinal or balsamic herb that adds some Nebbiolo context to the larger picture. The wine shifts quickly, moving away from those initial aromas to embrace grounded earthy tones of chalk, limestone, cola and zesty ginger. The wine's pretty evolution in the glass and those subtle transitions are very attractive. The mouthfeel is fine and delicate, and the tannin is well tucked in and silky.

  • James Sucking 93

A firm, silky red with blackberry, chocolate and hazelnut undertones. Medium to full body and a long, linear finish. Shows polish for the vintage. Better after 2022.

  • Wine Enthusiast 93

Camphor, forest berry, rose and exotic spice form the inviting nose Full-bodied and enveloping, the palate features dried cherry, tobacco and mocha before close-grained tannins grip the assertive close. Drink 2022–2029. KERIN O’KEEFE

  • Wine Spectator 95

Gorgeous aromas of cherry, strawberry, rose, eucalyptus, iron and tar mark this detailed red, which is balanced and rich, with a firm, well-integrated structure for support. Long and expansive on the finish, with a slightly dusty feel in the end. Best from 2023 through 2042.
