Barolo DOCG Cannubi 2016 - Marchesi di Barolo

Cannubi is a hill in the centre of the Barolo area. Here, the typical soils of the region, dating back to the Helvetian and Tortonian periods, meet and mix, creating grey-bluish marls, rich in minerals that are precious for the ripening of the grapes. Surrounded by higher hills, protected from disturbances and excessive ventilation, Cannubi enjoys a very special microclimate. The characteristics of the soil and its enviable microclimate give the wines from this restricted area completeness and balance, a harmonious synthesis of structure, fine aromas and elegant tannins. Wines that are good as soon as they are put on the market but also capable of ageing for decades, always offering new emotions. Ruby red in colour with garnet highlights, the nose reveals intense aromas, with a clear hint of rose, vanilla, spices and toasted oak. In the mouth it is a full-bodied, elegant and austere wine with soft, enveloping tannins. Pleasantly spicy, with a lovely, perfectly integrated woody note. If the table calls for typical Langa egg pasta dishes, such as tajarin or meat ravioli, this is the bottle that absolutely must be put on the trolley. Also perfect with boiled meats, braised meats and even game.

Barolo, the extraordinary wine that the whole world envies us, was born just a few metres from the company headquarters. The historic cellars of Marchesi di Barolo are in fact located in the centre of Barolo, just a few steps away from the castle that was the home of the last Marchesi Falletti, the first ever to produce the noble red wine of kings. The Abbona family, the current owners of Marchesi di Barolo, ideally continue the work begun by the Fallettis, placing themselves as faithful interpreters of the traditional vines and their places. Never as in this case the saying "combining tradition and innovation" applies. The company works with the main vines of the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, vinifying the most prestigious crus in purity, refining them and proposing them individually, to better exalt their different expressions. Knowledge of and respect for the different grape varieties and individual terroirs, combined with a vinification process that enhances their strengths. All this is Marchesi di Barolo.

  • Vinification Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks. Maceration lasts about 10 days, during which periodic pumping over is carried out to allow the must to take possession of all the trace elements present in the skins and to delicately extract the colouring material. Racking takes place only when all the sugar has been transformed into alcohol. The wine is then racked into specially made vitrified cement vats with cork insulation, where it is kept at a post-fermentation temperature of around 22° C for a long time. In this way, malolactic fermentation starts and ends spontaneously in the following two months. Aged for about 8 months in small 225-litre barrels of medium-toasted French oak and, for a further 12 months, in traditional medium-sized barrels of Slavonian and French oak. It completed its refinement in the bottle before being put on the market. Barolo Cannubi reaches maturity 6 years after the harvest and the maturation plateau is between 6 and 25 years

  • Terrain Cannubi is the long, gradually rising hill at the centre of the Barolo area. Here, soils from the Helvetian and Tortonian eras meet and mix, giving rise to grey-bluish marls rich in magnesium and manganese carbonates which, on the surface, turn whitish-grey as a result of the action of atmospheric agents: clays mixed with very fine sands, impregnated with a strong calcareous component of magnesium and manganese carbonate. Technically defined as fossil Marne di Sant'Agata, but known in jargon as Toû, they are composed on average of 55% clay, 30% sand and 15% limestone. Surrounded by higher hill systems, it is protected from disturbances and excessive ventilation and enjoys a very special, unique microclimate.

Really perfumed with sliced-strawberry, floral and cedar character that is aromatic and prevailing. Some white truffles, too. Medium-to full-bodied with succulent fruit and tannins. So elegant and refined with a long core of fruit. Try after 222, but already a beauty.

  • Wine Enthusiast 90

Aromas of red berry, wild herb and camphor lead the way. On the linear mediumbodied palate, dusty tannins accompany sour cherry, pomegranate and licorice. Drink through 2028. KERIN O’KEEFE
