"Scalandrino" Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC 2021 - Mantellassi

Who said that the Maremma is only a land of reds? In fact, many of the white wines produced in Tuscany come from that area. Fresh and very pleasant wines made from international grape varieties and small oenological gems made from traditional grapes, as in this case. Scalandrino, in fact, is a Vermentino della Maremma Toscana DOC, an interesting white wine offered here by Fattoria Mantellassi. First, a curiosity. The "scalandrino" is a rustic tool once used by farmers to climb over hedges. A 100% white Vermentino, the Mantellassi vines are rooted in soils of ancient tufaceous and calcareous origin, with low yields and high quality fruit. Softly pressed, with a very low yield (around 50%), Scalandrino ferments in French oak barrels. Then, at the end of vinification, the wine remains in barriques for a short period of maturation of about five months. This is followed by bottling and a further period of refinement in the cellar before going on sale. Brilliant straw yellow in colour, this Maremma Vermentino offers a fruity and persistent bouquet, the result of careful selection of the grapes elevated in oak barrels. In the mouth, however, one discovers a wine characterised by a soft body and a pleasantly persistent finish.

Fattoria Mantellassi: Ambassadors of Morellino. What more can be said? Fattoria Mantellassi," reads the company's website, "made a decisive contribution to the establishment of the Denominazione di Origine Controllata of Morellino di Scansano in 1978 and is considered one of the most prestigious producers. Coming from Pistoia, the Mantellassi family moved to the area of Scansano and Magliano around 1860 to work as "potini" and "grafters". The planting of the first vineyards took place a century later, in 1960, when the first four hectares were created in Banditaccia. Today, the Fattoria can count on about one hundred hectares of vineyards extending over some of the many hills of the Fattoria. Here Sangiovese is the absolute protagonist. And with it varieties such as Alicante, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Canaiolo Nero, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo, and the "white" Vermentino and Sauvignon. The Mantellassi Winery, on the other hand, is located in a strategic position, a few kilometres from Magliano in Toscana and close to each of the vineyards. This makes it possible, during the harvest period, to optimise work and have the grapes in the cellar very quickly, preserving all their best characteristics.
