With grapes sourced from vineyards planted in rich, black soils, the Felline Primitivo di Manduria Zinfandel Sinfarosa is openly sweet and succulent. The bouquet shows black currant and blackberry marmalade. The full-bodied mouthfeel is extremely chewy and rich, wrapping up with raisins, dried prunes and figs. If you're unafraid to pair Zin with sweets, as plenty of Italians do, this is a great one for Pugliese pasticciotti, or custard-filled pies. Gregory Perrucci bought his grape cuttings from Ridge Geyserville in 1998 and planted the Zinfandel in Manduria. Because this wine is in the Primitivo di Manduria DOC, I have left the Italian name of the grape and the English one as well.

An elegant, medium- to full-bodied red, with creamy tannins and a palate that ripples with black cherry coulis flavors and accents of ground anise, graphite, smoke and herb, lingering on the fresh finish. Drink now through 2024.

"Zinfadel Sinfarosa" Primitivo di Manduria PDO
  • There is a close kinship between our Apulian Primitivo and the grape variety known in California as Zinfandel. Indeed, it seems that there are many affinities between the two. Both love heat and are capable of producing great wines that are opulent and rich in colour and alcohol. "Sinfarosa" is a sort of homage from Azienda Felline to the famous relative that emigrated to the other side of the ocean. A Primitivo di Manduria produced with selected bunches of the variety widespread in California and processed just like an American Zinfandel, with a nice maturation in oak barrels. The result is a powerful and decisive red characterized by a beautiful deep ruby colour, almost impenetrable. The nose is amazing for the richness of its intense and fruity aromas ranging from red to black fruit, with an elegant spice to complete the picture. In the mouth, finally, it is rich, round and full. A glass of great pleasantness and intensity, with firm tannins and an incredible persistence.

Write Puglia and read Primitivo. Write Primitivo and read "Accademia dei Racemi", a virtuous Apulia project for the valorization of the regional viticulture and of the many native vines, such as Primitivo. A leading role at Accademia dei Racemi is played by Azienda Felline, a historic Apulian company. The name of the winery derives from a vast archaeological area located a few kilometres from Manduria, which is the territory of origin of Primitivo. It is located a few kilometres from the beautiful beaches where legend has it that St. Peter landed on his way to the city of Rome to found the Catholic Church. Since the end of the nineties, Felline - in collaboration with other young and ambitious producers - has contributed to the enhancement of Primitivo, making it today one of the most important companies in the area. They offer a wide range of wines that includes all the typical reds of the region and is completed with interesting sparkling wines, whites and rosés. A good starting point for those who want to know the best of Apulian viticulture, without moving from their living room.
