"Flora" Pinot Bianco Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2018 - Girlan

Alto Adige DOC Riserva, Flora comes from a pure processing of Pinot Bianco grapes. An important and precious wine, it is produced using only carefully selected grapes, harvested on particularly suitable soils with minimal yields. Most of the grapes come from the typical production areas of Girlan, characterised by moraine soils very rich in skeleton, which give the wine its typical aroma, fullness and persistence. The remaining grapes come from the Eppan Berg micro-zone in the municipality of Appiano. A cooler area than Girlan, where the soils give the wine freshness and flavour. Fermented in 12 and 15 hectolitre French oak barrels, after the subsequent (and partial) malolactic fermentation, the wine is matured on its own fine lees in barrels. After about a year, it is then passed into stainless steel tanks before being bottled. This is followed by a further 6 months of bottle ageing, before release as a Riserva. This Pinot Bianco is straw yellow in colour and reveals very clear notes of pineapple and ripe fruit. Elegant and persistent, this Flora is pleasantly fresh and well balanced. A white that promises to age well, it is a very versatile wine. From speck to vegetable pies, it is difficult to put it to the test. Just be careful to choose dishes that are rather tasty, to prevent the wine from overpowering everything and stealing the show from our dishes.

23 must be a lucky number. At least in South Tyrol. Yes, because in 1923, the Girlan Winery was founded and, as chance would have it, it was founded by 23 winegrowers. Cabal aside, the winery is located in a historic 16th century farmhouse. Behind these traditional walls and in the intricate corridors of the cellar, the secrets of cutting-edge wine-making technology and the ideal conditions for ageing the wines are now hidden. A lot of water has passed under the bridge. And of wines in those cellars. Today, 200 winegrowers are involved in the Girlan project, spread over an area of approximately 220 hectares of vineyards. Vineyards in the best production areas of the Oltradige and Bassa Atesina, all worked with great dedication. The oenologist responsible for the creation of the wines is Gerhard Kofler, who personally maintains contact with the winegrowers and provides advice during the most delicate phases of the season. The result is here to be experienced. Wines of the highest quality, divided into three distinct lines: Le Selezioni, I Vigneti and I Classici.

  • Vinification Harvesting is done manually in small containers for transport to the cellar. After a soft whole cluster pressing, the must is separated by natural sedimentation. Fermentation takes place in 12 and 15 hl French oak barrels with subsequent (partial) malolactic fermentation. Refinement on fine lees in barrels lasts 12 months, 6 months in stainless steel tanks and 6 months in bottles before being marketed as Riserva.

Most of the grapes come from our production area of Girlan, which is characterised by moraine soils that are very rich in skeleton (porphyry rock), giving the wine its typical aroma, fullness and persistence. The remaining grapes come from the Eppan Berg micro-zone in the municipality of Eppan, which is cooler than Girlan (the sun sets earlier). Clayey-silt soils on limestone give the wine freshness and flavour.
