  • BERSANO S.r.l. - Nizza Monferrato

    Barolo DOCG 2017
  • One cannot think of Piedmontese wine without referring to the noblest of traditional reds. We are, of course, talking about Barolo, defined as the King of wines and the wine of Kings. Here Bersano offers his interpretation, produced with grapes from vineyards located to the right of the Tanaro river, within the boundaries of the DOCG area. This Barolo acquires pleasantness with time, thanks to slow ageing in Slavonian oak barrels for no less than 30 months. Then, after bottling, it rests for a few months in the cellar before being put on the market. As soon as you uncork it, you discover a wine characterised by a beautiful garnet red colour with slight orange hues. On the nose, the aromas are super-fine and typical. Intense and enveloping, they recall spices and ripe fruit. The palate reveals a rich, persistent wine with soft, ripe tannins. The typical notes of wilted violet and ripe plum dominate, to which are added hints of leather, liquorice and pepper. An important wine, to be appreciated it requires an equally important pairing. Perfect with game and red meats, it is also suitable to accompany cheeses with strong flavours. In its best vintages, this Barolo is capable of maturing in the bottle (particularly in the larger formats) for over 10 years.

More than a century has passed since the foundation of the Bersano company. The precise date is 1907, as proudly recalled on the home page of the company website. We are in Nizza Monferrato, the heart of the Barbera d'Asti district. The real turning point, however, came only a few years later, in 1935, when Arturo Bersano, a rare man in terms of intelligence and culture, a lawyer by family pride and a vine grower by passion, took control of the Cantina, which until then had been a family-run business and sold its wines only regionally. His work was inspired by the motto 'if you want to drink well, buy a vineyard'. A philosophy that, like a true pioneer, he would follow for the rest of his life. So over time, Bersano and, after him, the Massimelli and Soave families, owners of the Casa Vinicola, consolidated an impressive farmstead. Here, without forgetting the strength of tradition, quality grapes are still produced from which typical wines of the region are made. Particular attention has always been paid to the wood for ageing, the company's true asset. Cantine Bersano, in fact, keep large oak casks and tonneaux where, thanks to the constant temperature and humidity, the wines mature slowly for years. Today Bersano is considered one of the most important wineries in Piedmont.
