"Lu Veru Piaciri" Etna Rosso DOC 2018 - Al-Cantàra

A good glass of wine, better if drunk with lifelong friends, in a pleasant and reassuring environment. Maybe on a flowery meadow, or in the cool shelter of a century-old tree . If you visualized the scene, the right wine for the occasion is just this Lu veru piaciri, Etna DOC red from Al-Cantàra. It comes from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes, the two "friends" protagonists of the rebirth of Etna's viticulture. Noble grape varieties that draw their strength from the warm Sicilian sun and the magical dark soils of the volcano. The vineyard of origin is located on the northern side of the crater, at an altitude of about 620 metres above sea level. Manual harvest and careful vinification at controlled temperature. Then, after racking and malolactic conversion, the wine is left to age on its own noble lees for about three months in oak barrels. In the glass it has a beautiful intense ruby red colour, and is quite consistent. On the nose, floral and red fruit scents. Then almond, cinnamon and even cocoa. In the mouth it is soft and fresh. The tannin, typical of the vine, is elegant and dry.

Al-Cantàra was born from the happy intuition that a good wine is "poetry" and to make it you need "art" - as you can read on the winery's website. It is no coincidence that all the wines produced have names of poems by Sicilian authors and the labels reflect the works of two young painters from Catania. We're in the heart of Sicily. In a corner of paradise that is located exactly in contrada Feudo S. Anastasia in the municipality of Randazzo, 620 metres above sea level. The summit of Mount Etna, not far away, watches over the vineyards and the winery from above. The name Al-Cantàra comes from the river that flows at the foot of the volcano. Although young, the company was officially opened in 2005, has already established itself nationally and internationally thanks to the high quality of its wines, awarded by food and wine critics. Today the company can count on a total of 20 hectares of land, of which about 15 hectares are planted with vines. And among these about 4 are historical, over 60 years old, with a thousand prephylloxera strains. Total production, mostly under the hat of DOC Etna, is about 100 thousand bottles per year. Once again tradition and innovation go hand in hand under the blue sky of Sicily.

  • Sensations The wine is intense ruby red and quite consistent. On the nose, we initially perceivea floral scent with hints of red fruits, almond, cinnamon and cocoa. In the mouth, it is soft and fresh, the tannin typical of the vine, elegant and dry with a discreet persistence. We can pair it with roasted red meats, pasta timbales and cured meats.
  • Vinification The grapes are harvested by hand, in small crates, by a team of expert local women. Once in the cellar, the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed, then pumped into the different fermentation vats. The alcoholic fermentation lasts about twenty days, at a controlled temperature between 26 and 28?C. During this phase, pumping over and delestage are carried out in order to favour the extraction and stabilisation of the colour and perfumes. Once maceration is complete, the wine is drawn off and the malolactic fermentation takes place for about a month. Refinement: 12 months in French oak, 12 months in stainless steel, 12 months in bottle.
